Cheshire Cup Runners Up
By Catherine Evans
A successful afternoon of hockey
The U10 Boys Cheshire Cup was held in the blustery, but mostly dry, Macclesfield. Timperley were drawn in a tough pool including Brooklands, Chester, Alderley Edge B, Lymm and Bowdon.
The first match against Brooklands resulted in resounding 5-0 win, giving the boys an early confidence boost. Arguably, the toughest match in the pool was up next against Chester, and despite some strong play from both sides, it ended with a 1-1 draw. Alderley Edge B were seen off in a 3-0 win, followed by Lymm with a 5-0 win. Final match of the pool was against Bowdon - our Nemesis! It was a tough match but Timperley prevailed, with a 1-0 win and finishing the pool with 13 points an securing a place in the semi-final.
Chester also won all their matches except the draw with us so it was down to goal difference to determine first and second place. With 18 goals up vs. our 14, Chester went through in first place to play Alderley Edge A whilst Timperley were up against the opposing pool's winners, Neston.
After a tense deadlock, a penalty flick was awarded to Timperley which Timmy confidently put away to give Timperley the lead but it was short lived and not long after Neston scored an equaliser. The clock ticked down but with just a minute to spare, success and a second goal put TImperley into the final! Much excitement ensued - with much jubilation amongst the boys almost entirely centred around having earned themselves a hoody!
But back to the hockey... The other semi wasn't so easily decided going first to extra time, and then penalty flicks before Chester were finally victorious.
In the final, Timperley conceded a goal fairly early and for the first time were behind. A second goal for Chester went in shortly after, and despite digging deep and clawing back one goal, the match ended 2-1 down. All boys played their socks off and should be incredibly proud of themselves. Runners up is a fantastic result to secure them a place in the regional finals in Leeds.
