Weekly Update - celebrating our international blues flying the flag over Easter !

Shelagh Everett31 Mar 2024 - 12:38

Catch up with this weeks news from THC, whats coming up and those blues involved in international this weekend!

With the end of the National League season, and a break from NW League games its a quiet hockey free weekend for most over Easter but not all !

International Blues !
Huge congratulations to our young Blues playing in international matches this weekend:

- Josh Higgin (M1), England U16 Boys, in the boys 4 nations tournament in Glasgow.
- Molly Andrews (L2), England U16 Girls, in the girls 4 nations tournament at Lilleshall
- Adam Thwaite, Wales U18 (M2) v Ulster in Cardiff
- Freya Diamond (L1), Dreigiau (Wales) Women U23 v Austria in Cardiff
- thoughts too go to Jake Holland (M1) who is out injured and missed out on playing for England U18 Boys

Great experience for all our young players and a credit to them all and the focus and commitment they are all making to their hockey development and gaining junior international experience. Shout out to Freya who at 18 is also making her Wales U23 debut following the footsteps of fellow 1's players Eve Bowen and Connor Horrigan.

Rob Turner is also on England coaching duty this weekend too and we've even had Jo Nicholson 'Woody' Officiating at the World Masters Hockey Indoor World Cup in Nottingham (O35 to O60's!)

Congratulations to Robin Cooper (M1) selected Wales O35's for the World Cup in South Africa later this year and our amazing England O55's Trio - Lou Hutchinson, Debbie Chalcraft and Sarah Impey (reserve) heading to New Zealand in the Autumn for the World Cup. Awaiting news from the men's squad selection.

This all goes to show what a life long game hockey is!

League Season finale !

Last weekend saw the close of the National League season and a strong 7 - 4 win for the Men's v Doncaster say them that the Conference North Runners Up slot for the third year on the bounce with our highest ever points tally at this with 46 points, 87 goals for, 22 against and a goal difference of +65. Congratulations to the lads and coach Rob Turner on finishing Runners Up again and with such a defiant set out results but shows what fine margins are involved and two losses to champions Lindum means we go again next season to challenge for the Div 1 (North).

It was a bitter sweet day for the Ladies 1's in a fantastic game v Durham Uni 2's winning 3 - 2 in what was described by many watching as the best they've seen the girls for some years. Sadly, after 8 seasons playing in Conference North, and a strong final 5 games, picking up three wins, a draw and 1-0 loss to champions Pendle, it wasn't to be enough to stay up and we finished 9th place with 18 points, 1 points adrift of Harrogate who stayed up following a draw v Bowdon. Our points tally equaled 7th or 8th place in the other 3 conferences for the women and for the Men's 1 46 point tally was higher than all other conference winners. For the Ladies 1 the spirit is positive and we are go again next season with the aim to bounce back and build on the performances of the final few games of this season.

The North West League concludes this coming Saturday 6th April so do come down and enjoy the home game if not playing and hopefully more end of season celebrations. Let's get behind the Ladies 2's at 13:45 as they play Neston with a win needed to stay in NW Prem and the Men's 3's may still be in with the chance of the title stop too. Good luck to all teams and do come back to the club after away game too for a few drinks !
