Timperley Men's XI look to continue their unbeaten in the league record #comeonyoublues

With last Saturday's home match against Doncaster called off due to freak hailstorm shortly before the start, Timperley Men's hockey first team had a double header weekend this past weekend as they looked to continue their unbeaten league start to the season.

First up for the men was a trip up to Whitley Bay Hockey Club on Saturday, with most of the team making the long journey north on the Friday night to allow for better pre-match preparation on Saturday morning. Whitley Bay are always a very strong side at home, so Timperley knew they'd have to be at their best to get anything from the game.

A strong start for the away side meant chances were being created, Bolton and Vernon in the midfield were linking up well with Higson and Sinclair in the forward line. Polish international Michal Nowakowski was enjoying his left midfield spot and played in Wareham with a great through ball shortly before the break. Wareham took it around the goalkeeper and his shot was blocked illegally on the goal line by the defender's legs- resulting in a penalty flick being awarded. Nowakowski stepped up to convert and put the away side 1-0 up at the break.

After the restart and Whitley Bay began to get more into the game, and soon had their equaliser. Timperley defender DJ Ben Jackson appeared to be clearly fouled/pushed over by the attacker but the umpire waved play on to allow Whitley Bay to level proceedings. The home side were spurred on by their goal and they soon scored 2 more in quick succession to put themselves 3-1 up.

Timperley's unbeaten record was seriously under threat, and after Phillips was sent off with ten minutes remaining the game looked lost. The sending off appeared to somehow galvanise the away side and they didn't give in, a mistake by a Whitley Bay defender allowed Wareham to play in Tom Jones to slot his shot past the keeper from 12yards out with a cracking finish.

Whitley bay were rocking and it was all ten-man Timperley. Len Sinclair's run through the defence drew the keeper out to him, and after a bit of a scramble the ball fell loose to Wareham to reverse push the ball into the goal and make the score 3-3. A hard earned point was gained and Timperley remained unbeaten going into Sunday's massive top-of-the-table clash with fellow unbeaten side Doncaster.
