First round with top of the league Neston

Facing a remembrance weekend trip to Neston, the Timperley squad felt the need to authenticate the occasion by collecting a number of injuries and several cases of dysentery. Nonetheless, captain Goalen made it back from work in time to spur those still standing into battle. From the first whistle it was clear that any points taken from this game would have to be hard fought as Neston’s physical approach was immediately apparent. Within 2 minutes, the first casualty arrived in the dugout with a nasty gash. Despite the circumstances, Timperley fought hard and remained solid in defence. The midfield battle was fierce and, despite frequently turning the ball over in good areas of the pitch, Timperley could only manage a couple of half chances in the first period. Green, Looker and Mulligan continued to work hard in the press, despite a frustrating half for the front line. Through sheer determination, the blues managed to limit Neston’s chances as well, and came in at half time bruised and battered, but unscathed at 0-0.

Things took a turn for the worse in the second half with tired Timperley bones becoming magnets for the ball. A couple of fractures and several bruises later, it looked like the troops might hang on for a draw. Panteli and Horan fought hard in midfield, with the defenders and Small in goal soaking up everything that came through. As Neston got frustrated and the umpires intervened, Timperley kept their heads but weren’t able to capitalise on their opponents’ lack of discipline. Neston scored from a penalty corner with 15 minutes to go and, although Timperley kept fighting, they were unable to create any real chances to bring it level. Williams, Green and Richards hobbled off the pitch with matching bruises having all put their bodies on the line for the team and typifying the performance. Well battled and unlucky not to have held on for a point.
